Elections

In the view of the Electoral Committee (herin referred to as ‘we’), the student elections were carried out without incident. For the results of the election, please refer to the sheet provided in this package. We found that the placement of the polling station may have encouranged an increased voter turnout and potentially offset some of the difficulties in publicizing the election due to the displacement of the students’ union building.
The LSU received a number of complaints from students regarding the lack of publicity preceeding the election. We feel that although we agree that there is a definite lack in publicity, it is largely symptomatic of the aforementioned displacement of the students union and systematic issues such as lack of involvement of executives and students. We would recommend that in future, greater steps be taken in preparation in elections, including more physical publicity (posters, banners) and greater verbal communication with students, which may be facilitated by a greater Internet
presence and perhaps greater co-operation with the college.

Referendum

The Electoral Committee encountered numerous difficulties in administrating the referendum in a free and fair fashion in accordance to the bylaws and basic principles of the democratic process. We received numerous anonymous complaints in regard to the election and 4 official complaints, three from Ben Alldritt and one from Brian Lynchaun. In regards to the bylaws and policy, they are very few set requirements for referendum proceedings. This left the Electoral Committee in a situation where they felt that by communicating with both active interested parties, The Gleaner Publications Society and the Coalition for a New Student Newspaper, guidelines could be established in an informal, yet reasonable manner. Due to the continuously unfolding nature of the issues that arose, many of our decisions were essentially in reaction to circumstances. Concern arose over issues including campaigning at and nearby the polling station and illegitimate poster placement and removal.

These concerns are very serious and as a result, we feel that the democratic process was undermined. Since we cannot ensure that this referendum was free and fair, we cannot stand behind it as a legitimate polling of student attitudes towards to issue. It is our recommendation that the executive not ratify the results of this election. Furthermore, we recommend that the referendum by-laws be examined and policy constructed to prevent these same problems and set clear guidelines for the Elections Committee and for students and societies who wish to campaign for, or against a referendum.

Photos of the Deconstruction

I was lucky enough to be taken into the old LSU today to have a look at the progress, it's coming along. The (de)construction guys told me that they're still in the process of getting all the salvageable materials out and that the whole building will come down by very early February. They did say that while they do so they will be a considerable amount of noise, but it should be done within a few days!

Cheers.

The New Student' Union Building

In 2005, the Students' Union initiated plans to renovate and expand the current Studens' Union Building in order to meet the needs of Langara College's growing population. After conducting a cost study, it was determined that it would be more expensive to renovate the existing facilities than to construct a new building. Based upon the information provided by Teeple Architects, a decision was made to erect a new building.

Over the last 18 months, the Executive of the Students' Union has met with students through formal focus groups to assist in helping us design a building that meets students' needs. Based upon the feedback that we recieved, the Students' Union worked with Teeple Architects to create a schemativ design that will make our new building a focal point for student life on campus. Plans for the new building include:

  • 19,000 square feet of space (nearly twice the size of the current building)
  • Cafe/Restaurant
  • 700 square foot presentation room for guest lectures and meetings
  • 300 square foot meeting room
  • Used Bookstore
  • 5 new constituency centres including a large accessibility centre for disabled students
  • New administration offices and executive meeting room
  • Outdoor covered terrace
  • Bike shop
  • Student newspaper office

In addition to the above features, the building will also be designed in accordance with Gold LEED standards, The Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) is a green building rating system, which provides standards for environmentally sustainable construction and design. In adhering to these requirements, the new building will have:

  • 50-60% greater energy efficiency than the model Nation Energy Code
  • An energy efficient building envelope
  • Solar shading
  • Triple Glazing
  • Green roof for rainwater absrption
  • Rainwater recycling
  • Gray water recycling
  • Natural displacement ventilation
  • Natural and low VOC materials
  • Green maintenance program
  • Improved campus green space
Construction on the new Building will begin in April of 2008 and it is estimated to take approximately 16 months from demolition to construction. During the construction phase, the Students' Union will be temporarily relocated in a portable on campus property (in the car park near the Library).

Langara Students Union

Introduction

Formed in 1969, the Langara College Students’ Union is an organization composed of all registered students at Langara College. Membership in the Union begins at registration upon the payment of membership fees. Membership ceases at the end of the semester following the last semester of studies.

Function

On campus, the primary function of the Students’ Union is the protection and advocacy of the rights and interests of its members. The Union actively works for positive change on issues affecting students directly, such as student financial assistance, and indirectly, such as world peace.

Operations

The Students’ Union operates as a co-operative, providing services to members. These include an inexpensive photocopy service, a student discount program and more. From time to time, the Students’ Union also holds social functions in the Students’ Union Building.

More Information

Further information and copies of your Students’ Union Constitution and By-laws are available from the main office of your Students’ Union Building.

Students Information

Every Langara College student is a member of the Langara Students’ Union (LSU) and pays membership dues each semester. Each semester student elections are held for the LSU Executive Committee. A number of other committees are also open to students.
